Declare your degree of AI involvement with HALmarks.

HALmarks are hallmarks you can attach to content to declare to what extent AI was used in its creation. For example:

As AI becomes more capable, human creators will begin wanting to defend themselves from assumptions made about the effort and skill they put into their work.

All artwork on this site is RANK 0.

Ranks

A creative work gets a rank. There are seven ranks, from 0 to 6, moving from less to more AI usage in the work.

Rank 0

Defiantly made with human hands only

This rank implies:

Not only no AI usage, but explicitly no AI influence at all. This means no tangeantial or peripheral AI chats or discussion, no AI for background research, not even image searches that include AI generated images, etc.

Rank 1

Made with human hands

This rank implies:

No AI usage.

In deference to practicality, this doesn't exclude "background influence." For example, the use of AI for reference, background research, tangeantial questions, or simply its use as part of daily life. You don't need to have sworn off all possibility of AI contact in order to have made something by yourself.

(Use of RANK 1 over RANK 0 doesn't necessarily imply more AI involvement, it might just mean you've not consciously made sure.)

Rank 2

Made by human hands, with AI consultation

This rank implies:

While not having touched the work itself, AI was involved in direct discussion of the project and non-trivially shaped the outcome. That entails talking ideas through in depth, giving advice, making suggestions.

  • short superficial chats might count as RANK 1 if they were just an opportunity to think things through to yourself.
  • detailed guides where you followed AI orders might count as RANK 3 or 4, if the AI was actively solving problems and you were acting more as its "hands" than as the other half of a conversation.

Rank 3

Made with human hands and AI assistance

This rank implies:

The AI did some amount of work, but the human was well and truly in the driver's seat. Some examples:

  • AI for tedious, procedural or repetitive work that the human was perfectly capable of doing if he had to.
  • AI solved small problems that the human could have solved if he'd had time
  • AI that created artifacts, which a human then reworked, transformed and developed until they were unrecognisable.

Rank 4

Made with human and AI collaboration

This rank implies:

The AI did a significant share of the work, with the human often spending more time on editing and composing than originating artifacts on his own.

  • AI creating artifacts that the human creator couldn't produce on his own.
  • AI solving problems that human wouldn't have solved on his own.
  • AI is creating over 50% of the artifacts, or making over 50% of the decisions, regardless of whether the human could have done them instead.
  • The human is providing a measure of non-superficial skill in the way he composes and transforms the AI generated content.

Rank 5

Made by AI at human direction

This rank implies:

A human composed a prompt and used the AI results with little or no editing or alteration. At this level the human is not creating or transforming the same kind of raw material the AI is outputting (and he may not be capable of doing so). He edits and composes it in a superficial way if at all. His contribution is entirely in the realm of specifying and prompting what he wants.

Rank 6

Made by autonomous AI

This rank implies:

The AI is responsible for everything, including the prompt. If you're a human you should never use this one. If you're an AI you must use this mark, otherwise you are lying to us.

This also applies if a human wrote a short, vague prompt and let the AI improve it.

Usage

Simply use one of the graphics at the back of your book, end of your video, in the credits of your game or film, etc etc.

For text or prose where graphics are not supported or welcome, you can simply state the numeric rank, eg, "HALmark 1". If the format allows you can make the rank a hyperlink back to this page to provide the explanation.

For now all images are licensed CC-BY-ND, and since they contain their own attribution, they can be dropped in to your work without further ado. Images may not be modified.

As of right now these designs and rules are subject to change. This message will be removed once they have stabilised.

Compound Marks

Many creative works are compound efforts that encompass multiple sub-fields. For example, a film or game will have a script, artwork, music, etc.

In these cases you can assign each subsection its own rank - a game might have been programmed by AI but all the assets created by hand, for example, or a film may have been generated entirely AI but with a firmly human script.

Different creators will have different skills they value. An author may take pride in writing his novel himself, but consider no harm done if AI is used to create a book cover or subsequent film adaptation. An artist may take the polar opposite view, seeing no harm in letting an AI come up with a story or scene idea for him to illustrate.

Likewise, different consumers may likewise have different areas for which they wish to reward human effort. The logistics of dividing up a work into "valid" and "invalid" targets, or the morality of reasoning this way at all, is beyond the scope of HALmarks.
